Glucode Glucode Handbook

Passion

Living the value

Design

  • Having passion means caring about all aspects of design and how it influences different disciplines.
  • Being passionate about technology and how it supports/enhances design.
  • Maintaining a high energy in the team and being able to energise others with your passion.
  • Sharing knowledge and inspiration with others.
  • Keeping up with industry updates (e.g. WWDC, Apple website updates) and attending meet-ups.
  • Getting excited to try new things and having a desire to see them through to the end.

Engineering

  • Learning the ins and outs of something completely. Aim to understand everything about a new framework, a tool or use case.
  • Aim to be the best in class. That means on your platform, do the best you can. In your tooling, do the best you can. In your workflow, do the best you can. Incremental growth goes far over time, and is worth it.
  • Fighting for what you believe, and have respect for everyone’s stances.
  • Being mindful of the outcome. It’s easy to let personal beliefs and practices trump what we’re actually trying to achieve. Developers are there to execute on a plan, we’re often not the primary owner of the plan. If you understand and accept your position in the bigger team it is easier to accept some of the constraints or challenges you’ll face.
  • Constraints are a fact of life, we have to employ our creativity and apply our minds to solve within the constraints. Don’t be upset that a backend system doesn’t operate as you expect, or that some framework isn’t your first preference. Rather, view it as opportunity to learn something new, and figure out a new way of contributing.
  • Aligning your success with the client/user’s success, that way you won’t be frustrated by having missed your own agenda. Developers are meant to serve a greater good, within the bounds defined by the problem. Be a servant to the goal, not a hindrance for the sake of personal principle.
  • Having a self-energising drive to learn more about our industry and platforms we operate on.
  • Employing the classic “boy scout rule” of leaving code/documentation/etc better than you found it. If you can’t execute it yourself, highlight what can be improved to the relevant party.
  • Participating fervently in development activities and contributing it back into the bigger team.

Projects

  • Continually looking for ways to work smarter, not harder.
  • Looking for and focusing on the meaning and purpose of your work – remind yourself of it on a daily basis.
  • Having a passion for the product you are building, and what problem it will solve – using this as a central focus for yourself and your team.
  • Understanding and absorbing the parallel passions of your teammates, across all skill disciplines, to fuel how your team delivers.
  • Making your passion visible to your team, to energise them.
  • Maintaining high spirits for those who rely on you, even in moments when you don’t feel driven or inspired.
  • Caring about the emotional wellbeing of your team, and their bond as a squad. Driving them to do activities together that go beyond the work.
  • Keeping yourself abreast and up to date with recent industry information, so that you are able to answer client queries easily or identify any potential blockers or opportunities.
